Issues with Conventional Sanitary Pads

Harmful Chemicals

Conventional sanitary pads, which are widely accessible in the market typically include chemicals, specifically Dioxin, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), Phthalates and Chlorine, that enhance the fragrance to provide the consumer a feeling of freshness. These chemical substances may disturb the delicate balance of intimate areas, causing discomfort, irritation, allergies and long-term health issues among women.

Environmental Impact

The usual sanitary pads contain 90% plastic that leave substantial carbon footprint behind. One sanitary pad can sustain in the environment for 500 to 800 years since plastic used in them is non-biodegradable and emits harmful gasses. Due to which approx 2 Lac tons of plastic waste is getting generated annually. As a result, this is affecting the delicate balance of the eco-system and is detrimental to the environment.

Accessibility Issues

Many underprivileged girls cannot afford sanitary pads. That is leading to poor menstrual hygiene, missed school days and social stigma.

Promoting Health and Education

Women know very little or nothing about vaginal, fungal, yeast, and bacterial infections, as well as conditions like PCOD, PCOS, endometriosis, and infertility, many of which can be worsened by poor hygiene during the menstrual cycle. Lack of knowledge about menstruation often results in discrimination, myths, shame, and negative attitudes, depriving women of the opportunity to learn about their own bodies and build healthy lifestyles.

Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) is another major health concern that most women silently suffer from. Due to lack of awareness and support, many rely heavily on painkillers, which may provide temporary relief but can have long-term side effects if overused. Instead, adopting natural remedies can help manage pain in safer and more sustainable ways.

Thus, women need to be made aware and educated about these issues in the contemporary environment, where a range of health conditions impact them. By providing organic sanitary pads to underprivileged girls, we ensure they have access to safe menstrual products. This promotes better hygiene, reduces school absenteeism, relieves health concerns, and empowers girls to live with dignity and confidence.
